Aged Care Help

Mavis lives in a Residential Aged Care Facility and she called us as she was very worried about what was happening to her money. She said that she had given staff money to buy her things, most recently some clothes for $200, but that she hadn’t received the clothing or the money back. She also said that her Administrator sends money to the Facility when requested but that she didn’t know how much or how often it was being sent. Kate, our Advocate, talked to Mavis about her rights and the options available to find out about what was happening to her money and to give her more control in future. Once Mavis knew her rights and what could be done, a plan was put in place to find out what was going on.

Kate arranged a meeting with the Administrator and the Facility. At the meeting the Facility’s Manager told Mavis that their employee denied any knowledge of her giving them money for clothing or other items. The Manager also said they did not keep any records of her money or provide her Administrator with any receipts for purchases.

Mavis decided that she didn’t want to make a formal complaint, but she said that she wanted the Facility to provide her Administrator with receipts for all future purchases. Mavis also asked her Administrator to send her regular statements so that she could keep a check on her money.

Mavis was very happy that her concerns were addressed and that she would be able to monitor what was happening. She said that Kate had taken away all of her stress and that she couldn’t have resolved these issues without her.
